FRP tanks and vessels designed as per BS 4994 are widely used in the chemical industry in the following sectors: chlor-alkali manufacturers, fertilizer, wood pulp and paper, metal extraction, refining, electroplating, brine, vinegar, food processing, and in air pollution control equipment, especially at municipal waste water treatment plants and water treatment plants. 

Dry media typically involved a dry, solid media (such as activated carbon) suspended in the middle of the vessel on a system of beam supports and grating. The media controls the concentrationof a pollutant in the incoming gas via adsorption and absorption.

These vessels have several design constraints. They must be designed for

A typical storage tank made of FRP has an inlet, an outlet, a vent, an access port, a drain, and an overflow nozzle. However, there are other features that can be included in the tank. Ladders on the outside allow for easy access to the roof for loading. The vessel must be designed to withstand the load of someone standing on these ladders, and even withstand a person standing on the roof. Sloped bottoms allow for easier draining. Level gauges allow someone to accurately read the liquid level in the tank. The vessel must be resistant to the corrosive nature of the fluid it contains.     PRODUCT DESCRIPTION AND APPLICATION

     

    Chemical programmers improve color removal efficiency; reduce BOD & COD as well as sludge generation for a textile plant in India.

     An Indian integrated textile mill makes a wide range of textiles for both domestic and international markets. This plant generates about 2,000 m3 of effluent per day, which is discharged into the public sea water system. Because government discharge regulations are getting stricter, the mill has set a corporate goal to reduce water consumption. The customer was looking for a treatment solution that will enable them to recycle the treated water of the effluent treatment plant (ETP).

     

    Situation

    The main concerns of reused water are colour, BOD & COD, TSS, oil and grease. The ETP receives two streams from the plant, wool wash and dye house effluent.

    Chemical programmes such as lime and ferrous sulphate are used as primary coagulant and flocculant. PAC, used as the primary coagulant by the competitor for the last 15-years, did not achieve the desired solid separation and COD/BOD reduction.

    Primary clarification is followed by secondary treatment and dual media filter and then discharge. Colour removal efficiency was quite consistent with the former chemical treatment program.

     Solution

    The main objective was to reduce the total cost of operation (TCO) and improve the plant working environment with less chemical handling.

    AFE engineers conducted a mechanical, operational and chemical (MOC) survey to understand the improvement areas and propose solutions. The waste water sample was taken to the lab to select the best-suited chemical programmed and optimum dosage range. Because of the lab test, a new coagulant programmed.

    (ACQUA 207) and a flocculant programmed (ACQUA 209) were selected to improve color removal efficiency, BOD/COD reduction, and to evaluate which part of the ETP treated water could be used. During the field trial, the dosage of lime and ferric sulphate identified through the lab test was reduced by 30 to 40 per cent compared with the previous dosing.

    Environmental & Economic returns

    The following benefits are achieved by the ACQUA 207color removal programmed implementation:

    • Improved Effluent Water Quality:
      • 85 to 90 per cent of BOD/COD reduction is achieved.
      • Color removal improved from 95 to 98 per cent.
    • Significant Chemical Usage Saving:
      • Chemical consumption (lime and ferric sulphate) was reduced by 44 per cent, creating a safe working environment for plant employees due to less chemical handling.
    • Decreased Sludge Generation:
      • 5 tankers per day of sludge are reduced, a 50 per cent reduction.

    Conclusion

    Industrial manufacturers greatly affect the environment through water discharge and sludge disposal, and it is every manufacturer’s responsibility to minimize the discharge quantity and improve the water quality to protect our environment. With the best-suited ACQUA 207 programmed implementation, the customer was able to reuse water through reduced waste generation, chemical handling, and total operational cost.

    Reverse osmosis (RO) is a water purification process that uses a partially permeable membrane to remove ions, unwanted moleculesand larger particles from drinking water. In reverse osmosis, an applied pressure is used to overcome osmotic pressure, a colligative property, that is driven by chemical potential differences of the solvent, a thermodynamic parameter. Reverse osmosis can remove many types of dissolved and suspended chemical species as well as biological ones (principally bacteria) from water, and is used in both industrial processes and the production of potable water. The result is that the solute is retained on the pressurized side of the membrane and the pure solvent is allowed to pass to the other side. To be "selective", this membrane should not allow large molecules or ions through the pores (holes), but should allow smaller components of the solution (such as solvent molecules, i.e., water, H2O) to pass freely.

    Around the world, household drinking water purification systems, including a reverse osmosis step, are commonly used for improving water for drinking and cooking.

    Such systems typically include a number of steps:

    • a sediment filter to trap particles, including rust and calcium carbonate
    • optionally, a second sediment filter with smaller pores
    • an activated carbon filter to trap organic chemicals and chlorine, which will attack and degrade a thin film composite membrane
    • a reverse osmosis filter, which is a thin film composite membrane
    • optionally, a second carbon filter to capture those chemicals not removed by the reverse osmosis membrane
    • optionally an ultraviolet lamp for sterilizing any microbes that may escape filtering by the reverse osmosis membrane

    Water and wastewater purification

    Rain water collected from storm drains is purified with reverse osmosis water processors and used for landscape irrigation and industrial cooling in Los Angeles and other cities, as a solution to the problem of water shortages.

    In industry, reverse osmosis removes minerals from boiler water at power plants.The water is distilled multiple times. It must be as pure as possible so it does not leave deposits on the machinery or cause corrosion. The deposits inside or outside the boiler tubes may result in under-performance of the boiler, reducing its efficiency and resulting in poor steam production, hence poor power production at the turbine.

    It is also used to clean effluent and brackish groundwater. The effluent in larger volumes (more than 500 m3/day) should be treated in an effluent treatment plant first, and then the clear effluent is subjected to reverse osmosis system. Treatment cost is reduced significantly and membrane life of the reverse osmosis system is increased.

    The process of reverse osmosis can be used for the production of deionized water.

    Reverse osmosis process for water purification does not require thermal energy. Flow-through reverse osmosis systems can be regulated by high-pressure pumps. The recovery of purified water depends upon various factors, including membrane sizes, membrane pore size, temperature, operating pressure, and membrane surface area.
