PRODUCT DESCRIPTION AND APPLICATION
Chemical programmers improve color removal efficiency; reduce BOD & COD as well as sludge generation for a textile plant in India.
An Indian integrated textile mill makes a wide range of textiles for both domestic and international markets. This plant generates about 2,000 m3 of effluent per day, which is discharged into the public sea water system. Because government discharge regulations are getting stricter, the mill has set a corporate goal to reduce water consumption. The customer was looking for a treatment solution that will enable them to recycle the treated water of the effluent treatment plant (ETP).
Situation
The main concerns of reused water are colour, BOD & COD, TSS, oil and grease. The ETP receives two streams from the plant, wool wash and dye house effluent.
Chemical programmes such as lime and ferrous sulphate are used as primary coagulant and flocculant. PAC, used as the primary coagulant by the competitor for the last 15-years, did not achieve the desired solid separation and COD/BOD reduction.
Primary clarification is followed by secondary treatment and dual media filter and then discharge. Colour removal efficiency was quite consistent with the former chemical treatment program.
Solution
The main objective was to reduce the total cost of operation (TCO) and improve the plant working environment with less chemical handling.
AFE engineers conducted a mechanical, operational and chemical (MOC) survey to understand the improvement areas and propose solutions. The waste water sample was taken to the lab to select the best-suited chemical programmed and optimum dosage range. Because of the lab test, a new coagulant programmed.
(ACQUA 207) and a flocculant programmed (ACQUA 209) were selected to improve color removal efficiency, BOD/COD reduction, and to evaluate which part of the ETP treated water could be used. During the field trial, the dosage of lime and ferric sulphate identified through the lab test was reduced by 30 to 40 per cent compared with the previous dosing.

Around the world, household drinking water purification systems, including a reverse osmosis step, are commonly used for improving water for drinking and cooking.
Such systems typically include a number of steps:
Rain water collected from storm drains is purified with reverse osmosis water processors and used for landscape irrigation and industrial cooling in Los Angeles and other cities, as a solution to the problem of water shortages.
In industry, reverse osmosis removes minerals from boiler water at power plants.The water is distilled multiple times. It must be as pure as possible so it does not leave deposits on the machinery or cause corrosion. The deposits inside or outside the boiler tubes may result in under-performance of the boiler, reducing its efficiency and resulting in poor steam production, hence poor power production at the turbine.
It is also used to clean effluent and brackish groundwater. The effluent in larger volumes (more than 500 m3/day) should be treated in an effluent treatment plant first, and then the clear effluent is subjected to reverse osmosis system. Treatment cost is reduced significantly and membrane life of the reverse osmosis system is increased.
The process of reverse osmosis can be used for the production of deionized water.
Reverse osmosis process for water purification does not require thermal energy. Flow-through reverse osmosis systems can be regulated by high-pressure pumps. The recovery of purified water depends upon various factors, including membrane sizes, membrane pore size, temperature, operating pressure, and membrane surface area.
